How Rock And Roll Started

By Lee MacRae

Rock n Roll music has had a long, winding and storied history and has been performed by numerous musicians on a journey into many different genres and offshoots leading down to a wide range of subcategories we here in our time.

There definitely has been a large amount of arguments as to where the original term rock n roll originated but one thing is for certain, the term rock n roll was black slang for sex! The phrase was definitely in use in the early 1900s and we have a piece of music recorded in 1922 by Trixie Smith entitled My Man Rocks Me With One Steady Roll. Many of the blacks in the 40s and 50s got quite a kick out of the phrase being used on white music stations without the conservative audiences of the day with the conservative audiences of the day not really understanding what the connotation meant.

Rock n Roll became a real force in the 50s when Elvis Presley began to play a version of music that became known as Rockabilly which combined rock n roll with his country and western background. Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were two other artists who performed rockabilly while black artists like Little Richard and Fats Domino performed rock n roll that was highly influenced by black rhythm and blues. Even the legendary Johnny Cash was a rockabilly artist with his hit song Folsom Prison Blues back in 1956. But whichever way you want say how it started, rock n roll was definitely here to stay. There was a bit of a lull with rock n roll into the early 60s but English bands were covering many American rock n roll hits along with all of the rhythm and blues records they could find and before long the Beatles and the British invasion occurred in America bringing with it a resurgence of rock n roll.

Rock n roll music has had an amazing cultural impact around the world. Everything from hairstyles, clothing styles and fashion, lifestyles and attitudes and language have all been influenced in some way by the varied iterations of rock n roll. Rock n roll also spawned a very large number of stars and superstars who sold millions and millions of records, CDs, MP3s and musical downloads.

Rock n roll music came from a wide range of influences like country and western, early blues, rhythm and blues as well as black spirituals and folk music and has in turn created genres like progressive rock, folk rock, glam rock, psychedelic rock, alternative rock, punk music, surf music and heavy metal.

May rock n roll rock on forever!
